Smart cities are often associated with heavyweight platforms, black-box integrations, and vendor lock-in. But what if municipalities could take back control—technically, financially, and ethically?
SIGRE (Smart & Intelligent Green Region) is a Free and Open Source Software platform developed in cooperation with Stadtwerke Meran and the city of Merano. Designed as a modular, lightweight solution for managing smart infrastructure, SIGRE covers core domains such as smart metering, lighting, waste, and water management—while remaining fully customizable and transparent.
This talk will explore how SIGRE empowers small and mid-sized municipalities to build their own smart services using open standards, edge-ready architecture, and zero licensing costs. We will highlight:
• Lessons from real-world deployment in Merano
• The ethics of local data sovereignty in civic infrastructure
• How FOSS enables sustainable digital transformation at scale
