OpenStreetMap for Inclusion

Map services can be summarized in two categories: open data (e,g, OpenStreetMap) focusing on the local community and mainstream (e.g. Google Maps) focused primarily on roads and commercial services.
The first reason for using OpenStreetMap (OSM) database is because it is an open data service and, moreover, because every object can be mapped. So, OSM focuses its data on the local community an aspect that is often overlooked by mainstream mapping services.
Secondly, everyone can develop tools and applications based on OSM data, making an environment of instruments in constant growing.
In this talk we will summarize the story of the project ‘Adopt Your Town’: a workshop proposed for third-year high school pupils, to be conducted during the 2025/26 school year. During this mapping workshop, thanks to the work of 26 pupils, the town of Pesaro has increased the number of map changes by over 95,000 units.
Other pupils, after them, based on the work of their schoolmates, have printed tactile maps of their campus. This is only the first step. The ‘Italian Union of Blind and Partially Sighted People’ have shown interest in these kind of 3D maps which can be easily done for each zone, not only in the town of Pesaro.
