The progress in large language models (LLMs) has rapidly transformed software development. The adoption of using LLMs to write code (so-called vibe coding), has seen significant adoption rates, not just among novice/amateur software developers, but now also in large software companies and in tech startups.
Such developments raise difficult legal questions pertaining to intellectual ownership. Who owns copyright in such code? How do we approach licensing with LLM-generated code? And are our existing frameworks able to sufficiently handle these questions?
This talk will focus on explaining these questions and the difficulties experienced when we go about trying to untangle these legal complexities, albeit with the caveat there are no easy answers to be had at the moment.
