Twenty years ago, on September 1, 2005, all Italian-language schools in the Autonomous Province of Bozen-Bolzano switched to using free software on their educational computers. In this talk, we will briefly review the history of the FUSS project (Free Upgrade in South Tyrol’s Schools), the reasons behind this choice, highlighting the strengths and challenges faced, and conclude with an overview of the current state of the project which is now officially recognized as a Digital Public Good.
