Idealists will say that open source contributors and maintainers are all volunteers, but the truth is that developing open source projects costs money. Relying on all-volunteer teams is a risk for individual projects and the ecosystem at large; relying on charity doesn’t accurately reflect the value that open source project create. In this talk, Emily will talk about why the open source community should embrace a more commercial approach to funding open source projects, and the key questions project maintainers who want to support their project by building a business around it should ask themselves to increase their chances of success.
