Electronics are among the fastest-growing waste streams worldwide. While much attention is paid to recycling and material efficiency, one critical prerequisite for truly circular electronics is often overlooked: openness. Products that cannot be repaired, updated, or maintained due to proprietary software, closed interfaces, or missing documentation will inevitably become waste, regardless of the quality of their physical materials.
This session introduces the Cradle to Cradle Electronics Initiative (C2CEI) as a pioneering framework to solve this crisis . The speakers will outline how this pre-competitive network of industry leaders, NGOs, and researchers is actively working to establish new standards for circular hardware.
Drawing on the C2CEI’s latest work frameworks and illustrating them with practical industry insights, such as the Teufel MYND speaker development. This talk demonstrates how software freedom directly extends product lifetimes, improves repairability, and enables continuous innovation across global value chains. Participants will gain firsthand insights into how the C2CEI serves as the primary bridge between digital sustainability and systemic circular design.
