‘Public money, public code!’ – a demand that is becoming more important than ever. But what happens when this demand is actually implemented?
In this talk, we will show how digital sovereignty and modern cloud infrastructures can be reconciled – an approach that is particularly relevant for public authorities, local governments and educational institutions.
Using concrete use-case scenarios, we discuss how public administrations can work more efficiently, securely and independently – and why it is becoming increasingly necessary to move away from proprietary dependencies. We provide a practical insight into our everyday development of open source software and show how we design our software development life cycle for open, transparent and reusable software and where we have encountered unexpected challenges along the way. We share our experiences, lessons learned and solutions to technical hurdles, organisational structures and legal pitfalls. The aim is to encourage other public actors to take responsibility for public code themselves and thus help shape the path to true digital sovereignty.
