Events lie at the heart of social life and should be given appropriate treatment in the Fediverse. Events are already supported by multiple ActivityPub applications. However, the ActivityPub specification is quite vague with regard to events; the event object can be complex; and applications are designed for different purposes. This results in limited interoperability between applications. This talk will provide an overview of the current situation and how to overcome the current fragmentation. Can Fediverse enhancement proposals be designed so that they can be used by applications serving different purposes with regard to events? Over the last two years, I have been working on events in the Fediverse and have discovered many different use cases. The vision is to make events a natural part of the Fediverse so that they can be shared and represented consistently across platforms, without each application making its own assumptions.
