From the Fediverse to the Open Social Web

towards the digital freedom to subscribe, communicate and interact across the entire web

Seminar 4

18:0015 mins07/11/2025

Today’s fediverse is mostly formed from open-source clones of commercial social media sites, but decentralized and communicating with each other. This talk will make the case that perhaps we are not thinking big enough. What if instead we thought of the federation protocols (e.g. ActivityPub and friends) as something that could be added to most websites and make them interoperable with other sites? It turns out that if we did that, the web would get a very powerful upgrade that would be good for users and (most) websites.

In this talk, we’ll take a look a possible future for the fediverse by applying its protocols more broadly, and outline how you can help.
