Crisis engineering, digital resilience, and free software

Seminar 2

11:0035 mins07/11/2025

Europe’s dependence on American tech is a clear and present threat to Europe’s sovereignty and independence. At the same time, governments and businesses are continuing to migrate more critical infrastructure onto American tech. Why, and what can we in free software do about it?

The field of crisis engineering studies how organizations transform during existential crises – and why it’s so hard to change them without one. Once we understand what makes organizational change so rare, we can find ways for free software communities to be prepared and ready to lead transformative change when the crisis does arrive.

I will share how crisis engineering informed the ways I’m using free software to improve Europe’s digital resilience: starting a local Internet Resiliency Club, moving my online presence to European hosting, and developing CRA standards that support free software. By the end of the talk, you will have your own ideas about how to improve digital resilience in your community!
