This presentation focuses on the creation of an online exhibition by employing Free Software tools. The exhibition is a visualisation of the book Construction Toys and Modern European Culture: Education, Politics, and Technology, 1830 to 1940. The creation of the online exhibition was a pilot project realised at the Research Institute of the Deutsches Museum in Munich, the world’s largest museum of science and technology. The project aim was to demonstrate the potential of digital, Free Software tools for public outreach in museums. In other words, how such tools can enhance the educational impact of museums and inspire new forms of cultural engagement and knowledge discovery among diverse audiences.
