It’s becoming very trendy and fashion to have automation at home and manufacturers are selling very cheap IoT devices at lower and lower prices. But to make the life easy for end users they are also “gifting” them with centralized cloud management. It indeed avoids the need of a local server or gateway and solves NAT traversal problems, letting users be able to reach their devices from everywhere in the world via the Internet, with this triangulation (device, Cloud Server, Smartphone).
