Building software in the open is straightforward: host a repository, pick a license, and let anyone pull down the code. Applying that same open source model to a road-legal electric vehicle, however, pushes open hardware way past its comfort zone.
Projects like RISC-V proved that chip designs can be shared freely, but passenger cars sit at the painful intersection of high safety risks, brutal supply chain barriers, and heavy regulatory control.
This BOF session dives into what it actually takes to build, document, and certify an open source EV. If you’re an embedded engineer, an open-hardware builder, a legal expert, an automotive hacker or just a FOSS enthusiast, we look forward to hear your ideas and solutions!
