\nWe have seen desktop F LOSS usage through COVID increase as people work from home\, while at the same time many organizations have quickly deployed temporary solutions tha t they now need to secure.
\nAt the same time developments in Ukrain e has provided a significant push on arguments around Digital Sovereignty that have been used to promote Free Software solutions for many years.
\nWe’\;ll share some of the trends\, successes and failures here\, investigate some of the tensions. We’\;ll look at the challenges of building an economically sustainable Free Software business that works in symbiosis with its diverse community.
\nFinally I’\;ll cover so me of my passion for documents\, and the encouraging changes and new funct ionality in this area over the last decades that (if sustained) will deliv er increasingly compelling Free Software from the operating system upwards on users’\; devices.

\nThis year’\;s SFS Award winner is neither fr om a private company nor public administration\, but rather works in acade mia.
\nHer field of study is human-machine interaction via cyber-phy sical devices\, which has often led her into schools where she has been in volved in both the experimentation of new teaching tools and the training of teachers themselves. With them\, she promotes the basic concepts of com puter science as a transversal discipline\, and does so through ‘\;ph ysical’\; computation\, with open languages and open hardware. She al ways finds ways to force (obviously in a positive way) users to be conscio us users of technology\, understanding the general principles\, mechanisms and logic behind digital technologies and not just their exclusive consum ption.
\nAt university\, on the other hand\, her courses aim to unle ash the creative and design side of students. Among the tools she makes av ailable to them there are always open hardware as a basis\, open source as programming languages and libraries\, open data for everything that can b e the subject of system integration.
\nIn order to encourage this ki nd of interest outside the academic sphere as well\, she helped opening th e Bitz\, the FABLAB at the University of Bozen/Bolzano\, and worked to mak e it accessible to the public\, especially to teachers and schools.

While it is crucial that machine learning models are reprodu
cible\, the issue is not sufficiently addressed in current research. Model
s can be irreproducible due to a variety of non-intentional and intentiona
l reasons ranging from time pressure to deliberate fraud. To assure validi
ty of published models\, some venues demand public availability of source
code or trained models. However\, these approaches have shown to be insuff

on source code and functionality during the publication process.
\nWe
discuss the need as well as the challenges of open source research on mac

\nThese solutions are integrated in a novel open

Sport climbing has become a popular sport\, and every year n ew climbing areas (crags) with climbing routes around the world are develo ped. This increased amount of outdoor crags leads to the problem when clim bers have to spend a lot of time trying to understand which climbing crag they would like to visit and which climbing route to climb. Unfortunately\ , nowadays\, there is no IT solution for automatically supporting climbers to choose climbing crags or routes based on their preferences\, thus\, we aim to address this issue by building a content-based climbing recommende r system developed for Arco\, Italy. The preferences of the users are lear ned via explicit feedback given through the mobile climbing application\, which is mainly used by the climbing community as an electronic climbing g uidebook and logbook to record their training information. The former hands the control back to the data owner by protecting the data at the point of its generation. The latter provides a possibility for Data Owners to control visibility over t hird-party access to their data granularly and establish a 1-to-1 relation ship with all the interested Data Users. needs.
\nThe issue is relevant in connection with the world of open
source\, where very often the user does not know within what limits he can
develop software and also when his work can be considered a derivative wo
rk.
\nBut not only that. The topic is particularly important in conne
ction with the contracts that assign intangible assets and know-how.
\nIn M&\;A transactions\, the question of succession in IP contracts is
of fundamental importance. Indeed\, the issue of software ownership and l
icensing is very important for the incorporating company. Very often in M&
amp\;A transactions\, due diligence is required to exclude possible risks
of copyright infringement. What are the clauses to pay attention to in sof
tware license agreements?
\nThe topic is of great interest in legal m
atters\, concerning\, for example\, the rights that the creator of the der
ivative work has\, the rights of the author of the original work and the c
hoice of the best license to release the software.
\nThe talk aims to
analyze the different possible answer to this questions\, trying to defin
e what is meant by derivative work and the clauses to be paid attention in
the contracts in order not to incur civil and criminal penalties in the c
ontext of merger and acquisition operations.

Born in Google and based on design thinking\, it relies on a tight coupling between an idea and the data that allow to verify or discard it\, ensuring that a product does at the same time match the business needs of the company and the needs of the final user. The advantages of this appro ach include a quick validation of new ideas before committing to a strateg ic project\, the alignment of different stakeholders on the objectives and challenges to be faced\, a structuring of creative thinking through visua l representation\, and an iterative verification of actionable outcomes. p>\n LOCATION:Seminar 3 URL:https://www.sfscon.it/talks/design-sprint-fast-problem-solving-through- collaboration/ TRACK:ICSOB - Industry track TYPE:ICSOB - Industry track CATEGORIES:ICSOB,Industry track DTSTAMP:20230726T100057 STATUS:CONFIRMED CLASS:PUBLIC END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT SUMMARY:Quiz Time DTSTART:20221111T140000 DTEND:20221111T142000 UID:64c0eed945efda616521ad95923245601cc34ed47d841 DESCRIPTION: LOCATION:Seminar 4 URL: TRACK:FSFE - Legal Education Day track TYPE:FSFE - Legal Education Day track CATEGORIES:FSFE,Legal Education Day track DTSTAMP:20230726T100057 STATUS:CONFIRMED CLASS:PUBLIC END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT SUMMARY:Flight data and Open source DTSTART:20221111T142000 DTEND:20221111T144000 UID:64c0eed9466bac99bf049c07d4ddfc70881647392f8a7 DESCRIPTION:
Using Open Source Software for live tracking airplanes? That’\;s no magic. In order to avoid air -to-air collisions\, most aircrafts have the obligation to use an ADS-B tr ansponder. They must continuously send their flight parameters to air traf fic controllers on the ground and to other aircrafts. With a little bit of hardware\, some FOSS software and a few scripts we are able to listen to this ongoing chattering sent through the air by aircrafts in flight. \nAgile approaches are the most used de velopment processes in a wide range of application domains. However\, Agil e was not designed to support the development of cyber-physical systems (C PS) since they often require not only traditional software development but also hardware and firmware co-development. This talk will present the cha llenges we face everyday developing a distributed IoT system with hundreds of devices in a Smart City application domain. The system is completely d esigned and developed internally including: a) custom circuit boards with dozen of components\; b) the related firmware for managing the device\, th e connectivity\, the sensors\, etc.\; c) and a cloud-based control and mon itoring system. The citizens will be able to identify themselves with their digital identity\, they’l l fill out a Web-Form and will send the generated digital document and the embedded data to the back office of the municipalities. The document will be automatically registered\, and the data will populate and activate the digital processes and procedures that are managed by the officials using the new back-office-software. The official documents will be sent to the c itizens through the private areas in the WEB-Portals in order to close the digital lifecycle and to avoid the use of analog and materialized communi cation.
\nThe new architecture is built and published as a shared se rvice for all the public administration in Italy and as an Open-Source-Pro ject that can be reused and extended by the interested communities and by the companies on the market. Query languages for databases (e.g.\, SQL) and knowledge gra phs (e.g.\, SPARQL) provide a concise\, declarative\, and highly flexible mechanism to access stored data. Yet\, many use cases also involve dynamic ally-computed data available through web APIs or other forms of external s ervices. In such settings\, data access is comparatively less flexible (e. g.\, due to restrictions on available input/output methods)\, convenient\, and sometimes prohibitively slow for users interactively querying data. I n this talk\, we discuss these problems and present open source solutions that enable querying dynamically-computed data as a “\;virtual”\ ; (since not fully materialized) relational database via SQL\, or as a 220\;virtual”\; knowledge graph via SPARQL\, at the same time providi ng pre-computation and caching solutions to speed up data access. The core components presented in the talk have been developed in the context of th e HIVE “\;Fusion Grant”\; project and the OntoCRM project\, both involving UNIBZ and Ontopic srl. In both projects\, we aim at extending v irtual knowledge graphs to dynamically-computed data\, with a particular f ocus on applications in the domains of environmental sustainability and cl imate risk management.

xploitation. Still\, enterprises often keep outdated software for several
months. When dealing with targeted attacks performed by Advanced Persisten
t Threats (APTs)\, this behavior does not seem appropriate. However\, we t
end to focus on specific APT campaigns and we miss the general picture.
\nIn this talk\, we provide a broader view of the APT landscape with an
analysis of more than 350 campaigns by 86 different APTs collected from o
pen-source resources. Contrary to common belief\, APTs are work-averse and
prefer to exploit known vulnerabilities. We will share an analysis of dif
ferent approaches to software updates\, from enterprises that update as so
on as a new release is out to enterprises that wait for the presence of a
CVE. We observed that\, given the need to perform regression testing befor
e applying an update\, enterprises that update only when a known vulnerabi
lity is patched present the same risk of being compromised as enterprises
that always update to each new version but perform significantly fewer upd
ates.
The key takeaways of this talk are the following:
\n-We
provide a broader view of the APTs\, their attack vector preferences\, an
d the use of 0-days vs publicly known vulnerabilities.
\n-We show the
effectiveness and cost of different software update strategies in prevent
ing APT campaigns.

How can AI biases threaten our health and mitigate inequalities? According to Dr. Antonella Santuccione Chadha\, founder of the Women’s Brain Project\, ambitious g oals set by precision medicine will be achieved using the latest advances in AI to identify the role of inter-individual differences. Yet\, we need to consider more than ever that our decisions significantly impact the fut ure treatment of patients and society. Despite scientific progress\, most biomedical solutions do not account for (neither desirable nor desirable) bias detection. Furthermore\, most algorithms neglect the sex and gender f actor and their relevance to individual variances in health and illness. F ailure to account for these variations could result in errors and discrimi natory consequences (Cirillo et al.\, 2020).
\nA solution to this is sue would be “no-code-movement\,” which stands for a type of web devel opment that allows non-programmers or people with great creative rather th an technical skills to build immersive online interactions\, such as 2D (W eb 2.0) and 3D (Web 3.0) applications\, and create software using a user-f riendly graphical interface\, instead of writing boring code. The no-code movement rests upon the fundamental belief that technology should enable a nd facilitate the creation and understanding and not be a barrier to entry . In this regard\, user experience (UX) approaches can be taken to make it inclusive\, adaptable\, and customized for each sex and gender variation representation.
\nHistorical sex and gender inequities and prejudice s can infect health research and practice (Cirillo et al.\, 2020). Thus\, developing AI precision systems in healthcare will enable the differentiat ion of vulnerabilities for disease and response to treatments among indivi duals while avoiding discriminatory biases. Furthermore\, the no-code move ment allows visualizations\, logical statements\, and dimensionality reduc tion techniques\, which can be implemented to achieve interpretability (Ci rillo et al.\, 2020). Therefore\, developing and applying fair approaches is critical for implementing unbiased and interpretable models for everyon e.
\nThe no-code approach also saves money since it requires less up
keep and upfront investment. Coding money could now be better utilized for
all sex and gender well-designed research\, implying that post-trials are
essential to scientific advancements (Rich-Edwards et al.\, 2018).
\
nFurthermore\, it allows for decentralized autonomy and innovation. When d
ecentralizing development–by removing the barriers preventing healthcare
users and professionals from experimenting and testing–no-code platform
s\, autonomy\, and innovation are encouraged. It also enables to be known
inside and out\, thus avoiding the “black box” effect. Indeed\, the EU
directive 2016/680 General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) states the
right to an explanation” about the output of an algorithm. In traditio
nal development\, the developers create a website\, app\, or another tool\
, then hand it over to the (third parties) that requested it. No matter ho
w much a development team explains about the tool\, there can always be as
pects of it that the receiver will be less familiar with\, thus creating d
igital literacy repercussions. Health professionals and patients will no l
onger be victims of digital literacy. Only by incorporating key ethical co
nsiderations during every stage of technological development can we ensure
that the systems maximize the wellbeing and health of the population. Tha
t is what we want AI to be: Human\, trustworthy\, explainable\, and inclus
ive\, leaving no one behind.
It is nowadays common place to find OSS licensed software an d components for anything related to infrastructure or middleware. But the monoculture brought by massive marketing investments of a few vendors is creating the trap of monoculture in many areas of IT. We therefore have to be mindful of not just using FOSS but ensuring we help foster rich and di verse ecosystems. In the end\, the monoculture trap is probably just as ba d a form of vendor lock-in as proprietary software.

The low-code/no-code movement has the core aim of making tec hnical tools more accessible to people without a technical background. For example\, there are multiple tools that allow people to create applicatio ns and to test their functionalities without writing a single line of code .
\nWhat currently is hard to find on the market is the possibility of testing and monitoring data quality without requiring coding skills. Da ta quality has a significant impact on the training of AI models and on th e correct functioning of web and mobile applications. However\, testing da ta quality is a burdensome task as it requires both technical and domain e xpertise.

Typically\, the missing person is located thro ugh calls\, coordinated with the help of fellow hikers. When this is not p ossible\, the mission focuses on locating the injured/missing person as qu ickly as possible to increase the chances of survival. Traditional methods many times turn out to be slow and require the use of a huge amount of re sources in order to scan the largest portion of area\, in the quickest tim e. For this reason\, the focus in recent years has been directed toward ex perimenting how to employ drones to support Search&\;Rescue operations. At the present time\, the Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corp of South T yrol has been experimentally adopting the use of drones to assist in the s earch for missing persons. In particular\, the unit is equipped with a MAV Tech Q4X drone with a high-resolution RGB 30x camera. This device allows t he surveillance of a very wide area\, from a different perspective\, and a lso enables monitoring of impervious and harsh locations. However\, the hu ge variety and complexity of scenarios makes human manual recognition diff icult for the operator\, requiring high concentration\, especially in long -lasting tasks\, with negative consequences on target detection. In this c ontext\, an automatic Deep Learning algorithm that aids the operator in hi s work can be very effective. The proposed solution\, developed in collabo ration with the University of Trento\, is based on YoloV3\, a one-stage ob ject-detector that has exhibited good performance on many datasets employe d in literature. The results show that the AI algorithm is capable of lear ning effectively from training sets. A solution was successively implement ed directly on the drone that takes advantage of a small computation archi tecture (NVIDIA Jetson Nano). This architecture was chosen because of its very small size and weight\, and its ability to provide GPU acceleration w ith very low power consumption. To summarize\, the proposed system process es frames from the UAV payload camera and sends any detection to the groun d. The detections are shown on the monitor of a MAVTech PCS (Payload Contr ol System)\, on which the payload video stream used by the camera operator during search operations is displayed.

y in recent years. Monolithic applications have been replaced by services
interconnected through APIs. Applications distributed across multiple serv
ices are often developed on multi-cloud infrastructures and developers and
DevOps have the ability to choose the best tools to implement within thei
r technology stack. In many companies\, C-Level figures are realizing that
IT teams dealing with application development use a myriad of different t
ools and solutions for data processing and analysis\, observability and mo

bringing a real cultural change within the organization.
\nPlatformOp

involved as the DevOps practices in use by the company increase\, allowing
developers to focus on application development\, rather than internal pro

\nBut how can you do this? In order to scale the use of the DevO
