DESCRIPTION:<p>The extraordinary changes of recent months have brought many
opportunities for the Free Software world.</p>\n<p>We have seen desktop F
LOSS usage through COVID increase as people work from home\, while at the
same time many organizations have quickly deployed temporary solutions tha
t they now need to secure.</p>\n<p>At the same time developments in Ukrain
e has provided a significant push on arguments around Digital Sovereignty
that have been used to promote Free Software solutions for many years.</p>
\n<p>We&#8217\;ll share some of the trends\, successes and failures here\,
investigate some of the tensions. We&#8217\;ll look at the challenges of
building an economically sustainable Free Software business that works in
symbiosis with its diverse community.</p>\n<p>Finally I&#8217\;ll cover so
me of my passion for documents\, and the encouraging changes and new funct
ionality in this area over the last decades that (if sustained) will deliv
er increasingly compelling Free Software from the operating system upwards

DESCRIPTION:<p>Open source software is software that can be used for any pu
rpose by anyone without the need to negotiate with the rights holders. Ope
n standards on the other hand are standards created in a process accessibl
e on the same terms by everyone\, but potentially with Standard-Essential
Patents (SEPs) associated and with fees to even read the standard. While t
he potential of both &#8220\;Opens&#8221\; is strong\, in reality there is
an underlying conflict between them that is growing in importance as the
business of traditionally SEP-centric companies relies more and more on so

DESCRIPTION:<p>As reflected in the criteria for software eco-certification
with the Blauer Engel seal\, the environmental label awarded by the German
government\, there is a direct connection between sustainability and tran
sparency/user autonomy. This connection has been the motivation behind the
KDE Eco initiative since its beginning in 2021\, as presented at the last
SFSCON. In short\, Free and Open Source Software&#8217\;s core values of
transparency and user autonomy gives it an edge to become the most resourc
e and energy efficient software! In this talk I will take a look both back
ward and forward to discuss the achievements and to-dos of the KDE Eco ini
tiative. Specifically\, I will address the following:</p>\n<p>* What are t
he achievements of KDE Eco so far? These include Okular receiving the Blue
Angel eco-label\; they also include research by KDE community members int
o methods of energy consumption measurements\, setting up a community lab
at KDAB Berlin\, and developing tools for measuring software\, among other
s.</p>\n<p>* What are the to-dos going forward? Here I will present our go
als for the future and the steps we are taking to achieve them.</p>\n

DESCRIPTION:<p>Although the number of internet devices we use everyday is g
rowing\, the artificial restrictions against running Free Software on them
represent a threat for personal control technology. The negative conseque

neutrality is the policy concept that users should have the right of non-d
iscrimination of the services and software they use\, based on platform co
ntrol by hardware vendors\, manufacturers and service providers. It is a c
oncept that involves the fair and non-discriminatory use of Free Software
in devices.</p>\n<p>The talk will explain why Free Software is fundamental
to implement Device Neutrality and the latest activities the FSFE has bee

DESCRIPTION:<p>Every year the Linux User Group Bozen-Bolzano-Bulsan assigns
the &#8220\;South Tyrol Free Software Award&#8221\; (SFS Award). The awar
d is given to a person who contributed to the introduction of the culture
of Free Software in the Province of Bolzano.</p>\n<p>The Free Software Awa
rd 2022 was delivered to Rosella Gennari.</p>\n<p><strong>Laudatio SFS Awa
rd 2022</strong></p>\n<p>This year&#8217\;s SFS Award winner is neither fr
om a private company nor public administration\, but rather works in acade
mia.</p>\n<p>Her field of study is human-machine interaction via cyber-phy
sical devices\, which has often led her into schools where she has been in
volved in both the experimentation of new teaching tools and the training
of teachers themselves. With them\, she promotes the basic concepts of com
puter science as a transversal discipline\, and does so through &#8216\;ph
ysical&#8217\; computation\, with open languages and open hardware. She al
ways finds ways to force (obviously in a positive way) users to be conscio
us users of technology\, understanding the general principles\, mechanisms
and logic behind digital technologies and not just their exclusive consum
ption.</p>\n<p>At university\, on the other hand\, her courses aim to unle
ash the creative and design side of students. Among the tools she makes av
ailable to them there are always open hardware as a basis\, open source as
programming languages and libraries\, open data for everything that can b
e the subject of system integration.</p>\n<p>In order to encourage this ki
nd of interest outside the academic sphere as well\, she helped opening th
e Bitz\, the FABLAB at the University of Bozen/Bolzano\, and worked to mak
e it accessible to the public\, especially to teachers and schools.</p>\n<

will allow an efficient<br />\nuse\, as well as\, some very unique use cas

In this talk Stefan will give you an introduction to the project\, its goa

DESCRIPTION:<p>This Presentation is about how to contribute to or to launch
an Open Source project (also called &#8220\;outbound open source&#8221\;)
as a company. It aims to describe a complete and lean process\, that can
be implemented in companies of any size (large but also small or medium si
zed organizations). Companies can tailor the proposed procedure to their n
eeds. I.e.\, depending on the size and situation of the company not all st
eps need to be implemented.<br />\nIt covers compliant contributions to ex
isting projects as well as launching own Open Source Projects as a company
.<br />\nDifferent contribution models are introduced and explained. Addit
ionally\, a recommendation is provided how spare time contributions from e
mployees (aka moonlighting) can be made known and transparent to the compa
ny to protect the employee.<br />\nTopics and good practices to be conside
red when planning to launch an own Open Source project as a company are pr
ovided. Although the provided information does not guarantee the success o
f such an endeavor it is proven in use and very helpful for decision-makin
g\, launching and maintaining<br />\nThe procedure and background informat

DESCRIPTION:<p>While it is crucial that machine learning models are reprodu
cible\, the issue is not sufficiently addressed in current research. Model
s can be irreproducible due to a variety of non-intentional and intentiona
l reasons ranging from time pressure to deliberate fraud. To assure validi
ty of published models\, some venues demand public availability of source
code or trained models. However\, these approaches have shown to be insuff
icient\, for example\, because there are often no adequate quality checks
on source code and functionality during the publication process.<br />\nWe
discuss the need as well as the challenges of open source research on mac
hine learning. We address frequently occurring problems and offer (also te
chnical) solutions.<br />\nThese solutions are integrated in a novel open
source framework. The applicability of this framework is discussed in the
context of data generation and anomaly detection in electrocardiographic d
ata and its specific requirements concerning data samples and model validi
ty. Finally\, we present how such frameworks enable more reliable progress

DESCRIPTION:<p>Yocto is the go-to FOSS building environment for IoT and emb

s great power can create a lot of headache on the legal side. Some of the
reasons:</p>\n<p>&#8211\; keeping control on which source components are a

DESCRIPTION:<p>A key aspect in software development is also to write good d

DESCRIPTION:<p>Sport climbing has become a popular sport\, and every year n

aim to address this issue by building a content-based climbing recommende
r system developed for Arco\, Italy. The preferences of the users are lear
ned via explicit feedback given through the mobile climbing application\,
which is mainly used by the climbing community as an electronic climbing g
uidebook and logbook to record their training information. The initial usa
bility study showed that the system achieves high interest among climbers.
Furthermore\, the developed prototype of the climbing recommender system
would be presented. At the end of the talk\, we show the integration of im
age-based recommender technologies for improving content-based recommendat
 ions.</p>\n

DESCRIPTION:<p>Current centralized data sharing infrastructures fail to pro
 vide a reliable\, GDPR-compliant\, and ethical mechanism to share data\, t
hus\, impeding the development of the flourishing data economy. Indeed\, t
he future of technology and\, consequently\, the flourishing economy and s
ociety should be built on a paradigm of decentralization. This is known mo
re widely as the Web3 movement\, which is being celebrated as the future o
f the internet\, and which seeks to endow everyday internet users with the
capacity to have full control of their digital footprint. It aims to prov
 ide a trustless\, secure\, unmediated\, and verifiable infrastructure that
spreads control throughout the community\, putting the individual at the
center of it all.</p>\n<p>Aiming to tangibly implement this paradigm shift
\, decentralized data access control enabled by EcoSteer’s Data Ownershi
 p Platform\, provides a key to a trustless\, unmediated ecosystem of data
exchange where all the players are rewarded for participating. This is ach
ieved by means of EcoSteer’s patented Multicast End-to-End Encryption Sc
heme and Blockchain Smart Contracts. The former hands the control back to
the data owner by protecting the data at the point of its generation. The
latter provides a possibility for Data Owners to control visibility over t
hird-party access to their data granularly and establish a 1-to-1 relation
ship with all the interested Data Users. Furthermore\, Blockchain also ena
bles a straightforward compensation mechanism for data sharing in exchange
of goods and services\, which is an enormous incentive and an imperative
for a lively ecosystem of data sharing.</p>\n

DESCRIPTION:<p>Increasingly\, software is designed and developed from pre-e
xisting software\, that are modified and adapted according to one&#8217\;s
needs.<br />\nThe issue is relevant in connection with the world of open
source\, where very often the user does not know within what limits he can
develop software and also when his work can be considered a derivative wo
rk.<br />\nBut not only that. The topic is particularly important in conne
ction with the contracts that assign intangible assets and know-how.<br />
\nIn M&amp\;A transactions\, the question of succession in IP contracts is
of fundamental importance. Indeed\, the issue of software ownership and l
icensing is very important for the incorporating company. Very often in M&
amp\;A transactions\, due diligence is required to exclude possible risks
of copyright infringement. What are the clauses to pay attention to in sof
tware license agreements?<br />\nThe topic is of great interest in legal m
atters\, concerning\, for example\, the rights that the creator of the der
ivative work has\, the rights of the author of the original work and the c
hoice of the best license to release the software.<br />\nThe talk aims to
analyze the different possible answer to this questions\, trying to defin
e what is meant by derivative work and the clauses to be paid attention in
the contracts in order not to incur civil and criminal penalties in the c
ontext of merger and acquisition operations.</p>\n

DESCRIPTION:<p>This talk presents the design sprint\, a 4-day process for s

needs. Born in Google and based on design thinking\, it relies on a tight
coupling between an idea and the data that allow to verify or discard it\,
ensuring that a product does at the same time match the business needs of
the company and the needs of the final user. The advantages of this appro
ach include a quick validation of new ideas before committing to a strateg

challenges to be faced\, a structuring of creative thinking through visua
l representation\, and an iterative verification of actionable outcomes.</

is is a waste of costly time and resources. In this research\, a framework
named the Experimentation Machine is developed that helps entrepreneurs t

sumption-driven entrepreneurship\, and possibly even more successful as st
artups. The framework has been evaluated with seven startups\, who used th
e Experimentation Machine over a period of 10 weeks. Our findings confirm
that startups benefit from the framework and that it enabled them to quick

DESCRIPTION:<p>The era of uncertainty that the market is going through due
to Covid\, wars and rising inflation\, generates strong stimuli that impac
t company’s business and public administration activities that are incre

rganizations need to be more resilient\, readjust their strategies quickly

h drives organizations to rethink their business model in terms of digital
assets by recombining the various business capabilities into reusable Pac
kaged Business Capabilities (PBCs).<br />\nTo make the paradigm real\, we
need ad hoc platforms that provide tools to create and manage PBCs: the Ap
plication Composition Platform (ACP).</p>\n<p>With a maximum delay of five
years compared to the migration to the cloud\, we will also see that towa
rds composable applications. It will be a highly diversified factor on the
market: according to Gartner\, in fact\, by 2023 those who adopt it will
be 80% faster in implementing new features than competitors.</p>\n<p>Entan

DESCRIPTION:<p>In a world that is constantly changing\, we believe that it
is essential to drive forward a technology concept that specifically and d
eeply meets the consumers\, devices makers and developers needs.</p>\n<p>T
oday the IoT industry needs to defragment and connect the increasing numbe
r of devices that every day are put on the market. Imagine being able to c
reate smart appliances like a solar power management system that can inter
act with your dishwasher or dryer to select the best time to be on to save
money. Or a vending machine that can connect to your smart wallet for pay
ing and for collecting game points for your online avatar. Oniro\, hosted
by Eclipse Foundation\, enables that and much more.</p>\n<p>The idea of a
full-connected world can become real by developing a vendor neutral\, roya
lty free and well-supported ecosystem that embraces the Open Source philos
ophy\, that’s the Oniro Idea. This speeds up the go-to market and adds r
eliability as the effort is spread among the community. In this talk we’

experience as an IIoT company that takes part in this new movement.</p>\n

level in managing water resources and drought impacts. Collaboratively cre
ating and maintaining the ADO web platform (https://ado.eurac.edu/) that f
eeds on big data satellite and climate archives on the input side and show
s curated drought information through an interactive web platform for stak
eholders and decision makers calls for automated workflow management.<br /
 >\nThe workflow for the ADO project combines the components of data downlo
ad from big open data satellite and meteorological archives\, scientific c
omputation of drought indicators for the alps\, storage of the data and me
tadata in raster and vector databases\, update of the interactive ADO web
portal. Continuous Integration and Continuous Development (CI/CD) pipeline
s permit to chain processing tasks and integrate updates directly into the
production environment. This concept is ideal for managing the operationa
lization of the ADO data production and visualization pipeline. It allows
decentralizing the maintenance of the different components\, starting the
pipeline based upon events (availability of new data in the archives)\, tr
iggering of chained computation tasks and automated updating of the intera
 ctive web portal.</p>\n

DESCRIPTION:<p>The Südtiroler Gemeindenverband has created a Microservice
and Open-Source Architecture for the Citizen-to-Government digitalization
of the administrative proceedings in the Southy Tyrolean Municipalities.</
p>\n<p>In this talk\, we are pleased to present the technical architecture
with all the layers and components used and how they interact with each o
 ther.</p>\n<p>Using Vaadin\, Kubernetes\, Springboot\, Keycloak\, RabbitMQ
  and Open-Source-Tools like Prometheus\, ElasticSarch\, Kiali and others\,
it is possible to achieve an End-to-End/Citizen-To-Administration digital
ization of the business processes and procedures within the boundaries of
the national and local laws\, using the state-of-the-art technology. Furth
ermore\, this architecture is built to guarantee scalability and best reso
urce and performance management.</p>\n<p>The collection of modular microse
rvices are able to interact with the main public and private third-party s
oftware in use in South-Tyrol and in Italy\, local and national WEB-Portal
s and infrastructures and with the italian Digital Identity. The citizens
will be able to identify themselves with their digital identity\, they’l
l fill out a Web-Form and will send the generated digital document and the
embedded data to the back office of the municipalities. The document will
be automatically registered\, and the data will populate and activate the
digital processes and procedures that are managed by the officials using
the new back-office-software. The official documents will be sent to the c
itizens through the private areas in the WEB-Portals in order to close the
digital lifecycle and to avoid the use of analog and materialized communi
cation.</p>\n<p>The new architecture is built and published as a shared se
rvice for all the public administration in Italy and as an Open-Source-Pro
ject that can be reused and extended by the interested communities and by
the companies on the market. The software is produced following the princi
ples of “Security by Design” and “API-First” (OpenAPI 3) and the w
hole software lifecycle will be managed with agile methodologies.</p>\n

SUMMARY:Integrating Dynamically-Computed Data and Web APIs into &#8220;Virt

DESCRIPTION:<p>Query languages for databases (e.g.\, SQL) and knowledge gra
phs (e.g.\, SPARQL) provide a concise\, declarative\, and highly flexible
mechanism to access stored data. Yet\, many use cases also involve dynamic
ally-computed data available through web APIs or other forms of external s
ervices. In such settings\, data access is comparatively less flexible (e.
 g.\, due to restrictions on available input/output methods)\, convenient\,
and sometimes prohibitively slow for users interactively querying data. I
n this talk\, we discuss these problems and present open source solutions
that enable querying dynamically-computed data as a &#8220\;virtual&#8221\
; (since not fully materialized) relational database via SQL\, or as a &#8
220\;virtual&#8221\; knowledge graph via SPARQL\, at the same time providi
ng pre-computation and caching solutions to speed up data access. The core
components presented in the talk have been developed in the context of th
e HIVE &#8220\;Fusion Grant&#8221\; project and the OntoCRM project\, both
involving UNIBZ and Ontopic srl. In both projects\, we aim at extending v
irtual knowledge graphs to dynamically-computed data\, with a particular f
ocus on applications in the domains of environmental sustainability and cl
 imate risk management.</p>\n

DESCRIPTION:<p>Software updates are a critical line of defense to prevent e
xploitation. Still\, enterprises often keep outdated software for several
months. When dealing with targeted attacks performed by Advanced Persisten
t Threats (APTs)\, this behavior does not seem appropriate. However\, we t
end to focus on specific APT campaigns and we miss the general picture.<br
/>\nIn this talk\, we provide a broader view of the APT landscape with an
analysis of more than 350 campaigns by 86 different APTs collected from o
pen-source resources. Contrary to common belief\, APTs are work-averse and
prefer to exploit known vulnerabilities. We will share an analysis of dif
ferent approaches to software updates\, from enterprises that update as so
on as a new release is out to enterprises that wait for the presence of a
CVE. We observed that\, given the need to perform regression testing befor
e applying an update\, enterprises that update only when a known vulnerabi
lity is patched present the same risk of being compromised as enterprises
that always update to each new version but perform significantly fewer upd
ates.</p>\n<p>The key takeaways of this talk are the following:<br />\n-We
provide a broader view of the APTs\, their attack vector preferences\, an
d the use of 0-days vs publicly known vulnerabilities.<br />\n-We show the
effectiveness and cost of different software update strategies in prevent
 ing APT campaigns.</p>\n

such systemic shift and its consequences\, both at national and regional
scales\, and to instill a gradual societal adaptation and change into the
population.</p>\n<p>The availability of robust and easily interpretable in

climate index is an objective measure of a specific climate condition over

DESCRIPTION:<p>Nowadays\, anyone can create their personal website with lit
tle to no code\, and without the need to employ a designer: the web feels
almost saturated with online tools which allow us to create webpages smoot

DESCRIPTION:<p>Design-based research in education (also known as educationa
l design research\, EDR) has long been making an argument for context-base
d\, participatory and iterative design of educational interventions. At th
e same time\, free software has enabled the community-based development of
applications that resolve shared problems.</p>\n<p>In recent years\, free
software applications like &#8220\;Twine&#8221\; have been driving the re
vival of text adventures and independent game development. Interactive dig
ital narratives\, or nonlinear\, branching multimedia stories hold numerou
s advantages for education\, as they are able to convey knowledge in a pla
y-based\, multiperspective fashion.</p>\n<p>In this presentation we will l

ased on Twine. Inspired by the ideas of Gianni Rodari and the &#8220\;gram
mar of fantasy&#8221\;\, it has been developed with the participation of S
outh-Tyrolean and Portuguese elementary schools to promote collaborative\,
subject-related storytelling that can be adapted for numerous learning go

SUMMARY:The impact of sex and gender biases in Artificial Intelligence
DTSTART:20221112T100000
DTEND:20221112T102000
UID:64c0eed95e7a278d8daa216de385a42a08d85fa04c580
DESCRIPTION:<p>What is the impact of sex and gender differences in Artifici
al Intelligence (AI) used in biomedicine and healthcare? How can AI biases
threaten our health and mitigate inequalities? According to Dr. Antonella
Santuccione Chadha\, founder of the Women’s Brain Project\, ambitious g
oals set by precision medicine will be achieved using the latest advances
in AI to identify the role of inter-individual differences. Yet\, we need
to consider more than ever that our decisions significantly impact the fut
ure treatment of patients and society. Despite scientific progress\, most
biomedical solutions do not account for (neither desirable nor desirable)
bias detection. Furthermore\, most algorithms neglect the sex and gender f
actor and their relevance to individual variances in health and illness. F
ailure to account for these variations could result in errors and discrimi
natory consequences (Cirillo et al.\, 2020).</p>\n<p>A solution to this is
sue would be “no-code-movement\,” which stands for a type of web devel
opment that allows non-programmers or people with great creative rather th
an technical skills to build immersive online interactions\, such as 2D (W
 eb 2.0) and 3D (Web 3.0) applications\, and create software using a user-f
riendly graphical interface\, instead of writing boring code. The no-code
movement rests upon the fundamental belief that technology should enable a
nd facilitate the creation and understanding and not be a barrier to entry
. In this regard\, user experience (UX) approaches can be taken to make it
inclusive\, adaptable\, and customized for each sex and gender variation
representation.</p>\n<p>Historical sex and gender inequities and prejudice
s can infect health research and practice (Cirillo et al.\, 2020). Thus\,
developing AI precision systems in healthcare will enable the differentiat
ion of vulnerabilities for disease and response to treatments among indivi
duals while avoiding discriminatory biases. Furthermore\, the no-code move
ment allows visualizations\, logical statements\, and dimensionality reduc
tion techniques\, which can be implemented to achieve interpretability (Ci
rillo et al.\, 2020). Therefore\, developing and applying fair approaches
is critical for implementing unbiased and interpretable models for everyon
e.</p>\n<p>The no-code approach also saves money since it requires less up
keep and upfront investment. Coding money could now be better utilized for
all sex and gender well-designed research\, implying that post-trials are
  essential to scientific advancements (Rich-Edwards et al.\, 2018).<br />\
nFurthermore\, it allows for decentralized autonomy and innovation. When d
ecentralizing development–by removing the barriers preventing healthcare
users and professionals from experimenting and testing–no-code platform
s\, autonomy\, and innovation are encouraged. It also enables to be known
inside and out\, thus avoiding the “black box” effect. Indeed\, the EU
directive 2016/680 General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) states the
right to an explanation” about the output of an algorithm. In traditio
 nal development\, the developers create a website\, app\, or another tool\
, then hand it over to the (third parties) that requested it. No matter ho
w much a development team explains about the tool\, there can always be as
pects of it that the receiver will be less familiar with\, thus creating d
igital literacy repercussions. Health professionals and patients will no l
onger be victims of digital literacy. Only by incorporating key ethical co
nsiderations during every stage of technological development can we ensure
that the systems maximize the wellbeing and health of the population. Tha
t is what we want AI to be: Human\, trustworthy\, explainable\, and inclus
 ive\, leaving no one behind.</p>\n

example\, there are multiple tools that allow people to create applicatio

.</p>\n<p>What currently is hard to find on the market is the possibility
of testing and monitoring data quality without requiring coding skills. Da
ta quality has a significant impact on the training of AI models and on th

DESCRIPTION:<p>In the Alps\, mountain accidents and missing persons are inc
idents that occur very often\, with peaks in the summer months due to the
increased tourist arrivals. Typically\, the missing person is located thro
ugh calls\, coordinated with the help of fellow hikers. When this is not p
ossible\, the mission focuses on locating the injured/missing person as qu
ickly as possible to increase the chances of survival. Traditional methods
many times turn out to be slow and require the use of a huge amount of re
sources in order to scan the largest portion of area\, in the quickest tim
 e. For this reason\, the focus in recent years has been directed toward ex
perimenting how to employ drones to support Search&amp\;Rescue operations.
At the present time\, the Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corp of South T
yrol has been experimentally adopting the use of drones to assist in the s
earch for missing persons. In particular\, the unit is equipped with a MAV
Tech Q4X drone with a high-resolution RGB 30x camera. This device allows t
he surveillance of a very wide area\, from a different perspective\, and a
lso enables monitoring of impervious and harsh locations. However\, the hu
ge variety and complexity of scenarios makes human manual recognition diff
icult for the operator\, requiring high concentration\, especially in long
-lasting tasks\, with negative consequences on target detection. In this c
ontext\, an automatic Deep Learning algorithm that aids the operator in hi
s work can be very effective. The proposed solution\, developed in collabo
ration with the University of Trento\, is based on YoloV3\, a one-stage ob
ject-detector that has exhibited good performance on many datasets employe
d in literature. The results show that the AI algorithm is capable of lear
ning effectively from training sets. A solution was successively implement
ed directly on the drone that takes advantage of a small computation archi
tecture (NVIDIA Jetson Nano). This architecture was chosen because of its
very small size and weight\, and its ability to provide GPU acceleration w
ith very low power consumption. To summarize\, the proposed system process
es frames from the UAV payload camera and sends any detection to the groun
 d. The detections are shown on the monitor of a MAVTech PCS (Payload Contr
ol System)\, on which the payload video stream used by the camera operator
  during search operations is displayed.</p>\n

DESCRIPTION:<p>One of the major issues in dealing with Artificial Neural Ne
tworks (ANN) relates to the high computational costs required for training
both accurate and efficient networks especially when using ANN models in
commodity hardware. We take the direction of training &#8220\;sparsified&#
8221\; ANN which significantly reduces computational time. Thus\, the prop
osed research is focused developing new evolutionary methods\, which are e
xpected to enable a further\, significant acceleration and miniaturization
of ANNs with both Machine Learning and Network Science strategies.</p>\n
